I am so saddened to hear of Sam's passing. I have wonderful memories of his songs and the joyful feelings they imparted. His annual concerts and sing-alongs at P.E. Central Elementary School when my kids were young will be a cherished memory for us always. He will be missed, but his songs live on. I know he's having some good peanuts and giving his neighbor some.

I heard today of Sam Hinton's death. He used to perform at La Jolla High School assemblies. It was perhaps the only assembly that the kids WANTED to attend. My family had our own Christmas carol tradition but as much as I enjoyed ours, I always wish I could have strolled through the neighborhood, singing with him.He was a lovely man. I still sing his Closing Time Rag with very little prodding.

Farewell, Sam Hinton. You enriched the lives of my self and my children, thirty some years ago. I order your LP album through the mail and we played it frequently. Many joyful tunes we still sing occasionally today. Thank you.

The first time I heard Sam Hinton sing was at the Unitarian Church in San Diego when I was 18 years old. Two years later, I was teaching first graders in the poorest section of Baltimore. During art projects, I would play Sam Hinton Sings the Song of Men, and Whoever Shall Have Some Peanuts. The children learned the lyrics by osmosis (a much easier way to learn!) After awhile, I brought my guitar to class and we could all sing their favorites, especially Looky Looky Yonder and Little Old Woman All Skin and Bones. For 6 more years, I used the same approach in a Stockton housing project,a migrant education community in central Calif., and in a very poor area of Fresno serving children from many different backgrounds. Every child, including my own, fell in love with Sam's music, just as I did so many years ago. His music will continue to charm and inform for years to come. We were blessed to have him among us as long as we did. My condolences to the family.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Sam some 25 years ago now when I wrote a feature story on him while in college. A true gentleman, wonderful musician who honored America's roots music. He will be missed by many. My heartfelt condolences to his family...Joe

I learned SO much from Sam. He'd look up when I started singing a song and immediately have a ton more lyrics. He was an absolutely amazing musician and gentle soul. I was in France when he passed, and learned of this just a few days ago. My thoughts are with his family. His music and kindness are with all of us forever.

I was very sorry to hear of Sam's recent death, but his long, happy and productive life is one to be envied and emulated.
What a great guy!
I believe it was at the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts (ISOMATA) in the Mts. of Southern California where I first heard Sam; about 40 years ago. His song "It's Closing Time Now" is still etched in my memory {"...we hate to see you go, but you just can't stay; our fish only work an 8 hour day...")written for closing time at the La Jolla Aquarium (?) where he worked at the time. I also remember him telling us that he had collected 30-some versions of the old English Folk song "Eggs and Marrowbone". Sam's humor and friendly personality must have endeared him to thousands -- listening to his music was always a heart-lifting pleasure.

I grew up sitting in my Grandmother's living room listening to Sam sing and singing with him. At every event he was there. I remember many times when he sang with Guy and Candy Carawan and how much I loved listening to them.
When I moved back to the neighborhood with my husband and 3 children each Halloween we would go to the door and trick or treat and Sam would greet my children, admire their costumes, whistle and/or sing a short verse and hand out their all time favorite, a zip lock bag full of the yummiest or nuts and chocolate.

As a Zoology major I always admired Sam Hinton's illustrations of sea life. Way back in 1969 I took an Oceanography class from Sam through UCSD Extension. Sam made the course extremely interesting.

Our beloved neighbors Sam & Leslie Hinton are missed so very much. Our children, Hilary, Debre & Lisa grew up with Leanne and Matt Hinton. We were early arrivals at the new University of California San Diego in La Jolla and the Hintons were already "old-timers" when we arrived and helped to make us feel welcome. With love from Sonia and Bob.

What an amazing person Sam was. I didn't know him well; I had the honor of taking a class from him, a class about music, history, and education. It was brilliant. My condolences to his children and to all the friends and relatives who loved him. The world of folk song will miss him, too.

Although we spoke only a couple of times, Sam Hinton was a presence in my life, from seeing him sing when I was about 7 years old, to attending his wonderful class on folklore while I was at UCSD -- not to mention other concerts, and his music albums.
I'm sad to hear he's gone, but he had a long and full life. My sympathies to the family.

I am truly saddened to hear of Sam's death.
I first became aware of Sam in the early 60s while living in La Jolla. I think it was my mother who introduced me to him at the aquarium, later took me to see him perform, and bought me 'Sam Hinton Sings the Song of Men' which was one of my favorite records as a boy.
Even as a mere lad I could tell their was much special about Sam. Part of it was the broad range of his interests and knowledge, and part of it was the humor and genuineness of his music. Sometime in the late 60s I got to see him perform again, this time at a Friends meeting house in Seattle. It was wonderful hearing him perform songs from the album I'd loved as a kid.
I wish I had known he was living in the East Bay. I would have loved to go and see him and thank him for the hours of pleasure I got listening to his music.

I am a dental hygienist in Encinitas. Sam was a patient in our office (Dr. Jim Seyfried) for many years along with his wife and sister in law all of whom were kind, sincere, and wonderful people. Sam always spoke so highly of his family and was so proud of all of you. He loved his music and the ocean. I feel blessed to have known him. He was a treasure. I am sorry to hear about his passing. What an amazing life he led! May his music and writings be an inspiration for generations to come.
